Chapter 25

Mateo

She came looking for me just as the sun’s rays shot across the treetops from the east. In full armor, twin swords on her hips, she marched toward me with intent.

My eyes dropped to my feet, an involuntary smile spreading across my lips before I glanced back up. I’d just finished with my visit to the bathhouse and was wearing little more than a pair of light cotton pants with a rough towel thrown over my shoulder, hair still damp.

She paused a few meters away, hands on her hips. Her sharp blue eyes raked my naked torso before settling on my face with a mild look of shock.

I raised my hands in question, closing the distance between us. “Are you here to battle, Little Warrior? As you can see, you’ve caught me off-guard.”

“S-sorry,” she stammered. “I just assumed…”

“That because you like to fight before breakfast, the rest of us do? Sadly, where I come from, we prefer to sleep when the sun is down.” I couldn’t help myself, she was far too innocent. I dropped my voice an octave and leaned in, adding, “Or at least, we prefer to be in bed until the sun rises… particularly if we have company.” Indignation crossed her face, the fiery scent of her dominance rising in response to my innuendo. A chuckle rumbled from my chest. “But I take it that’s not why you’re here. I confess, when I suggested you come find me for a challenge, I didn’t mean the kind that we use swords for, Little Warrior. If you want to dance, we don’t need those weapons.” I tilted my head toward the challenge rings, enjoying the rise of her frustration. “I’d be happy to give you a dancing lesson over there if you’d like.”

Her arms crossed defiantly, and she stared me down with contempt. “That’s not what I’m here for. You said I should come find you for a challenge, and you were wearing the armor of a warrior. If you aren’t up for a fight, I get it. But don’t say I shied away from the challenge.” Her golden hair was pulled back in a single braid today, sparkling strands already escaping to frame her pale face. She raised one eyebrow as she waited a moment, then sighed heavily. “Never mind, this was stupid. Forgive me for wasting your time. And mine.” She turned on a heel, whipping her braid around; I stepped aside to avoid getting hit with the tail.

“Wait!” I chuckled again, and she turned her fiery expression to stare me down. “I’ll fight if that’s what you want. I just need to get my gear. I can meet you at the ring?”

Kaliya shook her head. “I’ll wait here. There’s already a line forming to waste my time. I figure if I march in with you they’ll bugger off and maybe I can actually get a decent fight out of the deal. If you’re as good as you seem to think you are. Frankly, I’m skeptical.” She recrossed her arms and settled solidly into the position to wait.
